영화 체리향기(1997) | 왜 그럼에도 살아가야 하는지

자살만을 바라는 주인공 바디는 돈을 주겠으니 자신을 묻어달라고 네 차례에 걸쳐 사람들에게 부탁한다. 그러나 돌아오는 건 거절 뿐이다.
마지막 노인과 구불구불한 길을 달리고 여러 갈림길을 지나가며 그의 솔직한 체리향기 이야기를 듣는다. 역시나 한때 자살을 하려했던 그가 살게 된 이유. 변화를 가져다둔 체리향기.
그 이야기를 듣고도 여전히 자신을 묻어줄 것을 약속받은 바디는 노인을 차에서 내려준 뒤에 가슴 속에서 무언가를 느끼기 시작한다. 다시 그 박제사 노인을 찾아가며 혹시 죽지 않았을지 모르니 돌을 두 개 던지고 어깨도 흔들어달라는 바디.
해가 지는 풍경과 어린 아이들이 뛰노는 모습. 극히 사소하고 일상적인 모습이 그에게 평소와는 다르게 보인다.
노인의 이야기가 됐든, 그가 살기를 바라며 진심으로 길게 자신의 생각을 말하는 노인의 태도가 됐든, 일상의 아름다운 모습이 됐든, '체리 향기'가 바디에게 작용한 것이다.
영화는 바디가 왜 죽고 싶어하는 지에 대해서는 전혀 설명하지 않는다. 그가 이유가 무엇이 됐든 죽고 싶어한다는 심정이 문제이고, 결국은 이유와 상관없이 죽지 않기 위한 이유는 이 세상에 충분하다는 것을 암시하는 것이다.
이란의 삭막하고 광활한 사막 풍경과 그 속에서도 꿋꿋이 일상을 영위하는 사람들의 모습을 영화는 묵묵히 관찰하는 시선의 카메라로 담았다.
The protagonist, Mr. Badii, who desires only suicide, pleads with people four times, offering money in exchange for them to bury him. However, all he receives is rejection.
As Badii travels down winding paths and passes through several crossroads with the elderly man, he listens to the man's sincere tale of the taste of cherries. The old man tells why he decided to live despite contemplating suicide before - it was the change brought about by the scent of cherries.
After hearing the story and getting confirmation to get buried, Badii begins to feel something in his heart after he drops the old man off the car. He returns to find the old man, the taxidermist, and asks him to throw two stones and shake his shoulders as he might be still alive.
The sight of the setting sun and children playing, even the most trivial and ordinary things, appear different to him from sudden. Whether it's the elderly man's story, his sincere attitude towards wanting to live, or the beauty of everyday life, the 'taste of cherries' has an effect on Badii.
The film doesn't explain why Badii wants to die. It suggests that his desire to die, regardless of the reason, is the issue. Ultimately, the film implies that there is enough reason to keep living in this world, regardless of the specifics of one's circumstances.
The movie is shot with a contemplative camera that observes the stark and vast desert landscapes of Iran, as well as the people who persistently carry on with their daily lives within it.
